MHS Student Council & Student Government
STUDENT COUNCIL
The MHS Student Council is a group of representatives (eight per grade) who strive in leadership, community service, and school spirit. We meet every Wednesday morning at 7 am to plan numerous community service and spirit events. Here are a few examples:
Freshman Dance
This is your first dance at MHS! It will take place in the high school cafeteria in late September.
Pep Rally and Spirit Week and Spirit Dance
This is one of the biggest events for the Student Council. The Pep Rally is during school on the Friday of the football team’s Homecoming game. The entire school gathers in the gym to watch some funny videos, skits, dances, and games to ignite school spirit to support the football team!
The week leading up to the Pep Rally is called Spirit Week. Each day has a specific dress-up theme. For example, this past year we had “Color Day” and “Sports Day.” The Pep Rally and Spirit Week take a lot of planning, but they are also extremely fun and are always something to look forward to as a school!
The Spirit Dance is a school wide dance that is after a football game in the cafe. This is the only school wide dance that we have and it is super fun because everyone gets excited at the football game and goes into the Dance right after!
New Life
New Life is an organization that allows families who can not afford house appliances or furniture to come and get it for reduced or no cost. Student Council goes to the New Life for a day and builds bed frames, sorts furniture and tests appliances. It is not only a great community service activity but a bonding activity for the council as well!
Can Drive
Each first period class collects as many cans of food to bring to the Medfield Food Cupboard. The class that collects the most cans wins a class breakfast or pizza party!
Putting for Patients Mini-Golf Tournament
The MHS Student Council runs a mini-golf tournament in April to raise money for the Jimmy Fund, a Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Students, teachers, friends and family participate in the event and MHS has raised over $6,000 for cancer research.
Homeless Sleepout
Each year, the Student Council gathers in the center of town to help support the Medway Family Shelter. Students collect donations from people driving through Medfield throughout the entire afternoon and evening. After collecting the donations, we sleep on the lawn of the Town Hall in cardboard boxes!
STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Student Government consists of five students per grade. Each grade’s Student Government works individually. The five positions are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Representative to School Committee. Student Government plans fundraisers and events to raise money for its grade. In the past, these fundraisers and events have included:
· Hypnotist Show - This event is open to the whole community. A professional hypnotist calls volunteers from the audience up on stage to be hypnotized!
· Class t-shirts, sweatpants, etc.
· Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Sales
· Prom - Most funds from freshman and sophomore year are put towards planning the prom as juniors. This is a huge event in May that takes many months of planning.
Freshman elections for Student Council and Student Government will be held at the beginning of the school year. We are looking forward to welcoming each and every one of you and we hope you are excited too! Don’t hesitate to ask us any questions!
